Wang Lijun Not a Candidate for U.S. Political Asylum
Wang Lijun’s escape to U.S. Consulate seeking political
asylum has been the largest international scandal in Chinese regime’s history.
On April 24, Wall Street Journal (WSJ) quoted a senior U.S.
official who said, “This was a policy enforcer for a governor, not some freedom fighter."
Wang Lijun was not a candidate for U.S political asylum.
According to WSJ report, “The former police chief
in the Chinese city of Chongqing would appear,
on the face of it, a good candidate to receive diplomatic
protection or political asylum from the U.S.,
due to his access to senior Communist Party officials
and intelligence."
However, the decision was not so simple for
the Obama administration.
According to the report, the US. official said they never
seriously considered offering Wang Lijun political asylum or refugee status.
The report states,"Candidates for asylum must not
be suspected of committing criminal acts or
being involved in politically motivated violence,
according to U.S. officials and government regulations."
A senior U.S. official involved in the case said, “This was
a policy enforcer for a governor, not some freedom fighter."
Wang Lijun was not a candidate for U.S political asylum.
A U.S official said that the Wang Lijun case is different from
other cases because using human rights to protect a local police chief simply does not stand.
The report mentioned that Wang Lijun provided the U.S.
details of local corruption in Chongqing.
The report stated, “During a 30-hour stay at the American
consulate in Chengdu, Mr. Wang gave U.S. diplomats
information about the death of a British businessman, Neil
Heywood, last year in China, according to U.S. and British officials."
Independent commentator Hong Jian believes Wang Lijun
does not deserve political asylum in the U.S.
Hong Jian, “I think the U.S. is very sensitive about
a person like Wang Lijun
First of all, he is involved in lots of political infighting
and has committed many crimes.
Secondly, Wang Lijun is involved in persecution of Falun
Gong and live organ harvesting from Falun Gong practitioners.
This was a very evil deed.
So the U.S will not give political asylum
to someone like that."
According to the WSJ report, if the U.S. did consider giving
political asylum to Wang Lijun,
then there might have been an international conflict
during Xi Jinping’s visit in February.
Wang Lijun was taken out of the U.S consulate in Chengdu
by Beijing officials, and hasn’t been seen again since.
Independent commentator Wu Jianguo, “Even without
Wang Lijun, someone else would have exposed their crimes.
This was very good opportunity for Hu Jintao and Wen Jiabao.
This tells Hu and Wen that these people, Zhou Yongkang and Bo Xilai, are planning a coup."
According to Hong Kong’s South China Morning Post
report on April 24,
high-level management of state owned corporations were brought
together in Shenzhen to hear announcements regarding Wang Lijun.
South China Morning Post’s inside source said the regime
classified Wang Lijun as having committed treason, which means Wang Lijun could face the death penalty.
However, the source said that due to Wang Lijun’s help in
exposing Bo Xilai’s crimes, he might escape the death penalty.
